Healthy Gift Alternatives

Written by eHealth Navigator

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States according Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.  One of the best gifts you can offer to your loved one is exercise, even if it seems hard to find adequate time.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week.  Just 30 minutes of activity, such as walking on five out of the seven days dramatically reduces heart disease risk.

Here are a few gift ideas that are a healthy alternative to things you may typically think of when shopping for a friend or family member.  These gifts are even more thoughtful if you can do these activities with your loved ones.

  • An exercise machine (check with physician before starting).
  • Smoking cessation class.
  • Activity tracker for counting steps.
  • Croquet set for the backyard.
  • Running or walking shoes.
  • Gift cards for bowling.
  • Road or mountain bike.
  • A weekend in a local, state or national park.
  • Sunscreen for sunny summer months.
  • Sunglasses with UV protection.
  • A prepaid gym membership.
